Career and College Prep

Grades 9-12

“Don’t leave school without it.”  Career and College Prep is a requirement for all students pursuing a sequence in business.  Students will develop a career plan, master resume writing and interviewing techniques and design their individual career portfolio.  Checking, credit, insurance and forms of business ownership are just some of the exciting topics that will prepare students for the “real world.”  Guest speakers from various careers visit monthly and share their career experiences with students.  Students planning to major in business are strongly encouraged to take this course.


Introduction to Accounting

Grades 10-12

(200 level)

Did you know that Business is the most popular college major?  Accounting is considered to be the “language of business!”  This course stresses the principles and procedures needed to build a solid foundation in accounting fundamentals so that students will become thinkers, decision-makers and problem solvers.  At the conclusion of this course, students will complete a business simulation.


Advanced Accounting

Grades 10-12

Prerequisite: Introduction to Accounting

This course builds upon the accounting terminology and functions introduced in the Introduction to Accounting course.  The emphasis in this course is on partnership and cooperative formation and on cost accounting for manufacturing businesses.


Sports and Entertainment Marketing

Grades 10-12

(200 level)

From the Com Park in San Francisco to Madison Square Garden; from Nashville, Tennessee to Citifield, explore the psychology of promoting and selling goods and services.  Have you ever wondered how big name athletes get the product endorsements they do?  Why do they all earn millions?  Learn how stars and sports figures are promoted and how strategies are developed to target specific audiences.  Examine consumer behavior in the sports industry. Current events and case problems are integrated into the weekly class discussions, and you will have an opportunity to learn first-hand from current marketing periodicals such as Sports Business Journal.  Guest speakers and field trips are all part of this exciting course.

 

*College credit available for 11th graders only.  students can enroll in SUNY Farmingdale State University in the high school program, earning them 3 college credits for a fee of $120.00.  These credits transfer to all SUNY schools and most private schools will accept them if you receive a “B” or better in the course.


Money 101: A Guide to Financial Literacy

Grades 9-12

(200 level)

Personal Finance will help students to understand the complexities of money management at a time where it is sorely needed by all.  Students will learn about such topics as credit, home buying and mortgage options, retirement planning, investment options (stocks and bonds), etc.  All are vitally important to everyone as a life skill.  The use of current events will be stressed.  Students will relate how economic and business principles affect investments through guest speakers, the Stock Market game and classroom lecture.  The highlight of this course will be a field trip to the New York Stock Exchange and the Federal Reserve Bank/Mercantile Exchange.


College Business Law

Grades 11-12

(200/300 level)

Planning on majoring in business in college?  Business Law is a course requirement for all students majoring in business degrees such as accounting and business administration.  Get a head start and enter your freshman college year with 3 college credits by taking Business Law in high school.  students are given the option of enrolling in SUNY at Farmingdale University in the High School program earning them 3 college credits for a fee of $120.00.  These credits transfer to all SUNY schools and most private schools will take them if you receive a “B” or better in the course.  Enroll today and learn all about the legality of making transactions in business and your personal life.  Topics such as ethics, contracts, real estate, insurance, marriage and divorce will be covered.  Speakers in the field of law enforcement visit monthly to discuss their careers.  This course is a full year, one credit course offered at the 200 level as well.  College credits can only be offered to 11th and 12th grade students.  10th graders an enroll in the course but can only receive high school credit.


Fashion and Retail Merchandising

Grades 9-12

Start a retail business and watch it grow!  Students study basic business concepts and learn how to turn ideas into income.  After creating a business plan and mastering concepts in marketing and management, students apply these concepts to a real business.  Using our school store as our “lab,” students make decisions that affect the bottom line! Retail Management students are invited to schedule School Store Management.  The buck stops with these advanced students who are responsible for the implementation, management and overall execution of the business plan.  Field trips, guest speakers and simulation games are all part of this exciting course.


Travel and Tourism Marketing

Grades 9-12

(200 level)

The field of travel and tourism marketing is rapidly growing.  Many universities now offer specializations in travel and tourism marketing.  Students will examine current trends in travel and tourism and will explore the social, cultural and environmental issues surrounding tourism.  The curriculum will serve as a guide in preparing students for a possible career in the field.


Personal Keyboarding

Grades 9-12

(200 level)

½ credit

This half-year course will enable students to touch-type, while dramatically increasing their speed and accuracy. Students also learn the proper formatting of business letters, memos, reports and other professional documents.  It is ideal for college, career and home use.  Students are strongly encouraged to master their keyboarding skills before graduation.


Mobile App Design

Grades 10-12

(200 level)

½ credit

In this half-year course, students will use the mobile programming language and App Inventor program to program Android tablets and smartphones.  Students will learn how to design and build mobile apps - apps that are aware of their location, apps that send and receive text messages, apps that give advice and directions.  The only limit on the types of apps students will learn to build is their own imagination.


Web Design

Grades 10-12

(200 & 300 level)

½ credit

Students will learn to create web pages and sites for small business and personal use through the use of HTML (hypertext markup language) and Adobe Dreamweaver.  Students will produce web sites containing hyperlinks, graphics, multimedia and other applications!  Importing and exporting files, editing and designing the content of their sites will also be explored.  Some prior knowledge of computers is necessary.  Interest in programming is a must.


Microsoft Specialist

Grades 9-12

(200 level)

This is a technology course which allows students to become college and career ready by becoming proficient in Microsoft PowerPoint and Word.  Students will learn the skills and competencies that prepare them to earn Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) Certification.  MOS certification is the strongest industry-recognized application software endorsement a student can have, which will enhance their resume in today’s competitive job market.  Students have the opportunity to earn Microsoft Certification available via the ACE College Credit and University Network.


Excelling in Excel

Grades 10-12

Microsoft’s Excel software dominate the marketplace.  With an estimated 90% market share, it is found on nearly every business computer.  Microsoft Excel is used to calculate financial and statistical information and is used in a wide range of places, from individual households to Fortune 500 companies.  Learn skills that will make you a more valuable employee in the workplace.  Students will prepare to take the Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) Certification exam in Excel.  Upon successful completion, students will receive a certificate from Microsoft stating their proficiency.  Students have the opportunity to earn Microsoft Certification available via the ACE College Credit and University Network.


Introduction to Computer Programming

Grades 10-12

(200 level)

Students will learn about the fundamental principles of computer science.  Basic concepts of computer programming and coding are introduced.  Students will learn computer code by writing programs in Scratch that allows them to accomplish useful goals and solve practical computational problems.


Advanced Placement Computer Science

Grades 11-12

(300 level)

1 credit

Prerequisite: Teacher recommendation and director’s approval.

AP Computer Science teaches students how to program in the Java language.  It emphasizes object-oriented programming with a concentration on problem solving and algorithm development.  Students will design and implement solutions to problems by writing, running and debugging complete programs.  This course also includes the study and development of data structures and responsible use of systems.  Students will take the AP Computer Science exam in May.


IB Business Management SL

Junior or senior year

Prerequisite: Successful completion of Accounting or Business Law or its equivalent is recommended for this advanced course.

IB Business Management SL is a one-year course that may be used to fulfill the elective requirement of the IB Diploma Program or may be taken as a certificate course.  This standard level (SL) course is designed to give students an overview of business management concepts and strategies in the areas of human resources, accounting and finance, marketing and operations management.  Students will develop knowledge and understanding of business management theories, tools and techniques and how they apply in a national and global business environment.  Using a case study approach, they will learn to analyze and evaluate business activities from a social, cultural and ethical perspective.  In addition to the IB Business Management SL written exam administered in May, students are required to research and compose a written commentary on a real business issue or problem related to a topic on the course syllabus.
